What’s driving you to be your healthiest self?
So often when we indulge in something we know isn’t good for us, we have a reason/excuse sitting in the back of our minds, ready to spit out in our defense to help us justify our choices. We all do it, and it is somewhat of a natural reaction.
“I’ve had a really stressful week”
“I’ve been good every other day”
“I had no choice”
.. or something along those lines, is crafted by our ego and plays on repeat as we indulge, or ignore our good intentions. In our head, they are usually said with such conviction and clarity, leaving no doubt in our mind that there is a reason bigger than yourself, for making this choice.
So if this reasoning and clarity surrounding our choices works so well in keeping us comfortable eating poorly or making poor decisions, it’s common sense that it should also work for those good, life enriching, positive choices too, right?
One of the key components of successfully committing to a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle is being crystal clear on why you are doing it. What do you want to achieve? What is driving you to want to be healthier, happier, more active or perhaps just more in control of your future?
Is it your family? The way you feel in your skin? Your social life? Mental clarity?
Perhaps that fire inside you to eat better was ignited by the desire to have the fitness level required to run around the backyard with your three year old? Or your decision to get up for that 6am gym class stems from a deep rooted desire to once again feel comfortable in your own skin, whilst also finding a more supportive, likeminded group of friends. Or perhaps you are just like me, and simply want to live into your hundreds, un-medicated and full of joy.
Whatever your reason, it is crucial that the reason is smack bang in the forefront of your mind at all times. Ready to shout out from the rooftops, whenever you find yourself in a moment of temptation or indecision. And yes, we will all encounter these moments; sometimes on a day to day basis. And we wont always make the best decision. But if we are staying aligned to our truth and acting with our goals in mind 90% of the time, we are more likely to succeed in achieving the health and lifestyle we long for.
So how do we make sure that reason is always in the forefront of our mind?
Visual reminders are one of the best ways to do this. You could create a vision board, comprising of images or words that reflect your desired health situation, and pin it somewhere you look every day, like the fridge or your desk. A photo in your wallet, or setting a reminder on your phone for a certain time each day are also great ways of keeping the end goal in sight.
So remember, next time you have a moment of doubt, just ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” And hone into those feelings that came up for you when you first decided to make a change.
Do you use reminders or visual cues to keep your mind focused on why you’re doing what you’re doing? I’d love for you to share them with me. And if this post put a smile on your dial or gave you an ‘ah ha’ moment, I’d be ever so grateful if you shared it with your peeps!
Big love xx
